Design “The Fighting Cock” (Khoroos Jangi), graphic art, 1948.
In the artist’s words
“The cock, in terms of physical appearance, is a solid and aggressive creature, and in terms of coloring, striking; in terms of identity (in our literature), it is the representative of the angel Bahman, and as a vanguard, its duty has been to awaken the people. And since the beautiful and colorful appearance of the cock is close to painting, and it itself is also a manifestation of war and struggle, it was considered a suitable symbol for the goals of the association.”
About this work
The “Fighting Cock” design is the emblem of the Fighting Cock Association and the image on the cover of the magazine “Khoroos Jangi.” It was designed by Master Jalil Ziapour, and its name was chosen at the suggestion of Gholamhossein Gharib. On the cover of the first issue of this magazine (series 1, 1948), which was published under the supervision of the Fighting Cock Art Association as a supplement of the newspaper Qiam-e Iran, only the design of a black Cubist fighting cock, crowing, was printed: the same cock that Ziapour had designed as the association’s emblem.
The emblem of the association and the magazine, with its modernist design, is regarded as expressing the desire of all the Fighting Cocks more eloquently than Ziapour’s paintings. The painting of the cock on the cover of the magazine is likewise regarded as showing Ziapour’s mastery in the skilful execution of the Cubist style in the manner of Picasso.
The other pictures on this page show the covers of issues 1 to 5 of series 1 of Khoroos Jangi magazine (1948).
