Preface
Master Jalil Ziapour – the father of modern Iranian painting – did not consider the understanding of authentic Iranian art possible without the historical and anthropological roots of this land being known. Along with pioneering in painting and the theorization of modern art, he dedicated more than half a century of his life to field and historical research on the clothing, ornaments, motifs, and customs of the peoples of Iran; achievements that today rank among authoritative academic and artistic references.
In this collection, the history of Iranian clothing, ornaments, and motifs from prehistoric times to the contemporary era has been examined with scientific precision and an artist’s sensibility. Each volume is the result of years of travel, observation, note-taking, visual documentation, and dialogue with local communities; from nomads to villagers and tribes of various regions of Iran. Through this approach, Ziapour revealed the continuity of Iranian culture over time and showed how the motifs, colors, and decorations of daily life carry meaning and collective memory. In his view, tradition was not a repetition of the past, but a living language for consolidating the identity of contemporary art.
This collection is the fruit of the union of scientific methodology with the aesthetic insight of an artist; a link between art and anthropology that remains a guiding light for the research and creation of subsequent generations.
With respect,
Mahsha Ziapour, daughter of Master Jalil Ziapour
